What is Eights?
Eights is an iPhone app for capturing eight-second video memories and sharing them only with specific people you choose. It is a private alternative to social media: your home page shows your own memories and the ones shared with you, and nothing else.
When can I get Eights?
Not yet — Eights has not been submitted to the App Store, and we are not announcing a date, because we would rather ship it when it is right than name a day and miss it. There is no public beta. Put your email in the box at the top of this page and we will tell you when it is live; that address is used for that and nothing else, and the list is deleted afterwards.
How is Eights different from a social network?
Social networks are built around an audience — a public profile, followers, and a feed that ranks you against other people. Eights has none of those. There is no public profile, no follower count, no likes or view counts shown anywhere, and no way to broadcast a memory to everyone. Sharing is always to named people, and that restriction is enforced in our database rather than merely hidden in the interface. The one thing Eights personalises is which of the memories you can already see come back into your feed — and when one does, you can tell it not to come back again.
Why eight seconds?
The limit is the point. Eight seconds is long enough to hold a moment and too short to perform one, so recording stays a reflex instead of a production. Every memory in Eights is capped at eight seconds, whether you record it in the app or import it from your library and trim it.
Can anyone see a memory I haven't shared?
No. A memory is visible to its creator and to the people it was explicitly shared with, and to nobody else. There is no public feed on which an unshared memory could appear, and no setting that makes one public.
Is Eights free?
Yes. The free plan includes a monthly budget of new memories, sharing with exactly the people you choose, three shared capsules, and a capped number of offline saves. Eights+ removes those limits for USD $1.99 a month or $14.99 a year, billed through the App Store in your local currency — and if you are new to Eights+, your first month is free.
What is a capsule?
A capsule is a shared collection of memories — a trip, a summer, a friendship — that everyone added to it can see. Only a memory's own creator can add it to a capsule, so a moment never travels further than the person who made it chose.
How does search work if my memories are private?
Search runs over your own memories and the ones shared with you, never anyone else's. Your iPhone reads each clip on the device when you post it — transcribing what was said, and labelling what is visible in frame, including text it can read in the shot — and only that resulting text is stored with the memory. The footage itself is never sent anywhere for analysis, and the text is visible to exactly the people who can already see the memory.
Is Eights end-to-end encrypted?
No, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Your content is encrypted in transit and at rest, who can see a memory is enforced by our database, and video moves directly between your device and storage over short-lived signed links, so our servers do not read or decode it in normal operation. But we hold the keys to that storage, which means we are technically able to access stored content — for example to review an abuse report or answer a lawful request. The Privacy Policy sets this out in full.
Does Eights use my videos to train AI?
No. Eights does not use anyone's content to train machine-learning models, does not sell personal information, and does not use your content for advertising. The only automated reading of a clip happens on your own iPhone, to make your memories searchable for you.
What does Eights collect?
Enough to run the app and no more: your Sign in with Apple name and email, the memories and captions you create, the search text your device derives from them, who you shared them with, your subscription status, and basic device diagnostics. Eights does not collect your location, your contacts, your browsing history, or advertising identifiers, does not track you across other companies' apps, and never runs face recognition — tagging people is manual only.
What happens when I delete something?
Deleting a memory removes the database record and deletes the stored video files, which revokes everyone's access to it. You can delete your whole account from inside the app at any time. One honest caveat: a copy that someone saved for offline viewing sits on their device until it next reconnects, at which point it is purged automatically.
What do I need to use Eights?
An iPhone running iOS 18 or later, and an Apple ID — sign-in is Sign in with Apple, including Hide My Email. You must be at least 13 years old.
